Child's Play

Investing in your most valuable assets

Children have a pretty good sense of the type of things they want to do when they get older. Childhood is the only time when a person gets the opportunity to do the things that they find interesting without having to commit to it for more than they would like. Some kids find it fun to mop floors, and others like to run around and let their imagination be their toy.

From early on, their choices in playtime activities, extracurricular activities and interest in subjects (not always taught in school) begin to form a career path. Some are direct and some may take a while to develop but the most valued experience to the destination is the journey it takes to get there.

A college education is the fundamental method to remaining close to your goals, without which, those goals become more difficult to accomplish. Your annuity can be structured in order to allocate a determined amount of money each year for a predetermined amount of years.

Whether you are planning on going back to school in order to be the person that your inner child wants to be, or it is your children that you are securing the future for, allocating your structured settlement for your future, or your childs future is a pretty smart investment.

Crisis and Opportunity

Life is 10% what happens and 90% how you respond to it

11 million of us are jobless, the market is competitive and employers are selective. So maybe this financial crisis is an opportunity for you and I to pursue those things that we really like doing. Even if youre collecting annuity payments, are you just doing it and "getting by?"

One of my favorite episodes of The Simpsons is "Fear of Flying", in which Marge reveals her aversion to air transport, and learn of Homers rare fear of sock puppets.

In the beginning of the episode, after the family learns of Homers dismissal from his local tavern they offer their support.
Bart: Cheer up Homer
Homer: Can't
Bart: OK
Lisa: Look on the bright side dad. Did you know that the Chinese use the same word for crisis as they do for opportunity?
Homer: Yes. Crisatunity! Ive been wasting my life in that dump for years.

I didnt get released from a tavern; rather, a job and I know that I am not the only one. But I take Homer's response as an assertion to my own life. Why not take the opportunity to do something that will make me happier, rather than find something that will once again only allow me to "get by?"

Gas Prices Rising Again

It was nice while it lasted

As much as we want them to stay, all good things must inevitably come to an end. As unfair and painful as this is, all we can do is enjoy the things that we have while we have them.

The past few months have been very nice, even if not as many people had the opportunity to enjoy the low gas prices since consumption dropped by 3%. And now, the prices are slowly beginning to rise again. Hopefully this round will be a bit easier on our pockets since the demand is low and the economy is expected to get worse.

It sure was nice to revisit the prices we had in the 1990s. I remember I used to fill up my hooptie for $1.12 a gallon, and instead of investing my money wisely I blew the majority of it on junk, and car repairs. And now I am slowly paying off debt.

In this manner the basic economic principle of the time value of money is the lesson acquired.

The junk I bought and the car I had are all way in the past, and are barely even a memory. Had I spent or invested it wisely, the money I had would have been more valuable to me now than it was then.

Your Local Library

A place to go when you cant afford anything else

Have you been spending more time at the library? Apparently, the library business booms during sour times.

I spend a lot of my time in the library because I love to be around books, and spend time researching structured settlements, and in a good economy I have seen mostly homeless people come in to use the facility. In a bad economy I have seen a lot more people like me who just want a quiet place to write, search for work, and read the newspaper.

When the economy is down, people lose their jobs and use the librarys resources. The computers can be used for job searching if you dont have one at home. Also, when you are no longer able to spend expensive nights out with friends you can use the library for social networking. And if you want to cut back on renting movies from the video store, the library offers free movie rentals and also CDs.

Lottery Falls

Cutting you budget means drop in lottery sales

Nationwide, the lottery has fallen by $215 million this year. Under most circumstances the lottery is considered to be a recession proof industry, but with the economy continuing to spiral downward, people are cutting their budgets anywhere they can. This means no weekly lottery purchases, which can easily save a minimum of $300 per year.

I am a huge lottery advocate mostly because I am counting on my eventual lottery winnings to get me out of debt, but also because of the role it plays in the local community. It would be a shame if the lottery were to suffer due to the economic crisis, especially because it loses its potential spreading money.

I dont know what our upcoming Presidents economic stimulus package looks like, but we know that things are going to get worse before they get better. If we give up all of our spending habits, even the lottery, then that means even less money will be circulating in the economy.
